Looking for a screen-free way to unwind this winter?
The start of a new year always makes me want to reset — not in a “new year, new me” pressure kind of way… but in a let’s make everyday life feel better kind of way.
Last week, I kicked off my January activity/hobby series with a guide to yoga in St. Joseph. And this week, we’re shifting into something cozy, creative, and perfect for winter:
✨ screen-free hobbies you can try locally (and places that make it easy to start).
Because sometimes wellness isn’t another workout or productivity goal — it’s simply doing something with your hands, meeting new people, and taking a break from scrolling.
So if you’ve been wanting a new hobby… here are some of the best places in St. Joe to try one.
ALBRECHT KEMPER MUSEUM OF ART
If your idea of unwinding includes inspiration, beauty, and creativity, the Albrecht-Kemper is such an underrated place to spend time in the winter.
Not only can you visit exhibits, but the museum often offers:
Why this matters for wellness: There’s something about being around art that slows your brain down in the best way.

The library isn’t just for checking out books — it’s genuinely one of the best places in town to:
join creative programs
attend workshops
participate in hobby groups

Much More – check out their Events calendar here.
Why I love it: It’s one of the easiest ways to try something new without a big commitment.

Some things they offer:

Why I love it: It’s a “show up and create” type of place; you don’t need to already have supplies or experience.

JOYCE RAYE PATTERSON SENIOR CENTER(50+)
WHOA! The number of offerings they have is amazing. If you’re looking for hobbies that build routine, connection, and joy — especially for seniors — the Joyce Raye Patterson Senior Center is an incredible resource in St. Joseph.
This is a place where community and wellness overlap in the best way.
Activities include:
Fitness center and classes
Games (mah jong, bridge, chess, spades, table tennis, cornhole, and more)
Crafts (jewelry making, cake decorating, etc)
Line Dancing
Travel Club
Why it’s so important: Staying active helps seniors maintain strength, mobility, and independence, but just as importantly, it creates routine and connection. Community-centered activities like these can be a powerful support for mental wellness and overall quality of life.
