Looking for a New Hobby in St. Joe?

Looking for a screen-free way to unwind this winter?

The start of a new year always makes me want to reset — not in a “new year, new me” pressure kind of way… but in a let’s make everyday life feel better kind of way.

Last week, I kicked off my January activity/hobby series with a guide to yoga in St. Joseph. And this week, we’re shifting into something cozy, creative, and perfect for winter:

screen-free hobbies you can try locally (and places that make it easy to start).

Because sometimes wellness isn’t another workout or productivity goal — it’s simply doing something with your hands, meeting new people, and taking a break from scrolling.

So if you’ve been wanting a new hobby… here are some of the best places in St. Joe to try one.

ALBRECHT KEMPER MUSEUM OF ART

If your idea of unwinding includes inspiration, beauty, and creativity, the Albrecht-Kemper is such an underrated place to spend time in the winter.

Not only can you visit exhibits, but the museum often offers:

  • art classes

  • workshops

  • creative events for various ages

  • opportunities to build skills over time

Why this matters for wellness: There’s something about being around art that slows your brain down in the best way.

ST JOSEPH PUBLIC LIBRARY

If you’re looking for a screen-free hobby that’s affordable and community-focused, the St. Joseph Public Library should be at the top of your list.

The library isn’t just for checking out books — it’s genuinely one of the best places in town to:

  • join creative programs

  • attend workshops

  • participate in hobby groups

You might find events like:

  • crafts and creative nights

  • journaling or writing programs

  • beginner-friendly workshops

  • book clubs & discussion groups

  • children/teen/tween creative activities

Why I love it: It’s one of the easiest ways to try something new without a big commitment.

ART ATTACK STUDIO

If you want something fun, creative, and beginner-friendly, Art Attack Studio is one of the easiest ways to jump into a new hobby without overthinking it.

This is a great option if you’ve been wanting to try things like:

  • painting

  • DIY crafts, such as sewing

  • seasonal projects

  • creative classes where you leave with something finished

Why I love it: It’s a “show up and create” type of place — you don’t need to already have supplies or experience.

JOYCE RAYE PATTERSON SENIOR CENTER(50+)

WHOA! The number of offerings they have is amazing. If you’re looking for hobbies that build routine, connection, and joy — especially for seniors — the Joyce Raye Patterson Senior Center is an incredible resource in St. Joseph.

This is a place where community and wellness overlap in the best way.

Activities may include:

  • arts & crafts

  • group hobbies

  • games and social activities

  • movement classes (but not sports-focused)

  • learning opportunities and workshops

Why it’s so important: Staying active helps seniors maintain strength, mobility, and independence, but just as importantly, it creates routine and connection. Community-centered activities like these can be a powerful support for mental wellness and overall quality of life.

Rolling Hills Consolidated Library

Don’t sleep on Rolling Hills — this is another amazing local option for classes, groups, and creative events in a comfortable, community setting.

Depending on the season and location, you can often find:

  • book clubs

  • craft programs

  • educational workshops

  • family/kid programming

  • creative activities tied to seasons/holidays

Wellness tip: One of the best ways to feel happier in winter is having something to look forward to — and recurring classes or groups help with that so much.

HAND TO HAND GALLERY

If you love local art, handmade goods, and supporting creatives — Hand to Hand Gallery is such a gem.

Beyond shopping, places like this are often connected to:

  • local artists

  • pop-up workshops

  • community art events

  • inspiration for creative hobbies at home

Even if you’re not taking a class, this is the kind of place that can spark a new interest — whether it’s painting, pottery, handmade crafts, or simply collecting local art.

COFFEE SHOPS & OTHER LOCAL HANG OUT SPOTS

This might be one of my favorite categories because it’s so real-life St. Joe.

Places like Hazel’s Coffee, The Den, and other local spots often host:

  • one-off art classes

  • book clubs

  • creative meetups

  • workshops

  • community events

And even if they’re not hosting an event that week, these spaces are perfect for screen-free hobbies like:

  • reading

  • journaling

  • sketching

  • writing

  • learning something new alongside a cozy drink

Why this matters: Sometimes the best hobby is just leaving the house and putting yourself in a different environment.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re setting New Year intentions, easing back into movement, or trying yoga for the very first time, St. Joseph offers a variety of welcoming spaces to help you find your flow. From dedicated yoga studios and holistic wellness spaces to community and recreation centers with evening classes, there’s truly an option for every schedule, experience level, and comfort zone. As always, the best way to find the right fit is to try a class, listen to your body, and enjoy the journey toward feeling stronger, calmer, and more connected right here in our community.
